Senior Mechanical Engineer
On-Site • Oakland, CA • Full-Time • $150,000 - $170,000 Base Salary
About the Role
As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you'll leverage your extensive engineering expertise to design, prototype, and optimize electrochemical cells and systems. You'll closely manage relationships with external engineering contractors and vendors, oversee prototyping and product scale-up, and lead innovative electrode and cell designs. Your leadership will involve hands-on prototyping, vendor collaboration, manufacturing scale-up, and simulation-driven design. You will be a key contributor in a collaborative environment, focused on problem-solving and delivering robust, scalable products aligned with our mission.
Key Responsibilities
Collaborate closely with third-party engineering contractors and manufacturing vendors to ensure effective project execution.
Hands-on prototyping and assembly of electrochemical stacks, electrodes, and associated components.
Lead technical projects towards optimizing the design of the electrolyzer stack components. Assess and improve performance, safety, reliability, quality, and manufacturability.
Explore and implement new electrode designs, materials, and components, optimizing for electrochemical performance, thermal management, fluid dynamics, and pressure containment.
Oversee scale-up from lab-scale prototypes to meter-scale and manufacturing-scale components and products.
Establish and refine quality control systems and production workflows to ensure reliability and manufacturability.
Communicate clearly and proactively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders, addressing challenges and documenting project progress.
Champion safety standards in laboratory and production environments.
Required Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
A Ph.D. in a scientific or engineering field (e.g., chemical engineering, materials science, physics, mechanical engineering), or B.S./M.S. with 5+ years of relevant industry experience building electrochemical stacks
Demonstrable hands-on project experience working in an industrial setting with a strong background in mechanical engineering, and materials science.
Demonstrated experience managing engineering contractors and vendor relationships.
Strong hands-on experience with prototyping, electrode/cell component fabrication, and mechanical assembly.
Experience in manufacturing scale-up processes and challenges.
Solid understanding of thermal management, fluid dynamics, and pressure containment.
Proven ability to lead projects, collaborate effectively across teams, and deliver results in a fast-paced startup environment.Strong problem-solving skills, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment
Proficiency in CAD software, data analysis software, and experimental design
Experience with Matlab, Python, or similar data analysis tools is a plus
Commitment to the Aepnus mission, innovative spirit, anticipation capabilities, and a safety and security awareness mindset
Ability to lift 40 lbs. as required for cell assembly
Compensation & Benefits
Annual Base Salary Range: $150,000 - $170,000, plus equity
